A compact, powerful, and fully DIY mini drill with battery + adapter power!
Ever dreamed of building your own hand drill that runs on both battery and wall power? π€― I did β and now Iβm introducing Drillax, my DIY Dual-Powered Hand Drill built from scratch! A combo of Drill + Max Power, this compact tool is made with 3D-printed parts, a 555 motor, and a smart dual-power setup.
Letβs take a tour of how this powerful little beast came together. π οΈβ‘
Drillax Breakdown: Whatβs Inside?Drillax is made of four modular 3D-printed sections that fit together seamlessly:
πΉ Front Mount Section π- Houses and secures the 555 motor using M3 screws
- Connects to the body for structural stability
- Main chassis with air vents for active cooling
- Keeps airflow moving during continuous use
- Holds a standard 18650 Li-ion battery
- Secure fit with screw-mounting to prevent rattle
- Ergonomically designed for comfortable handling
- Built-in male DC jack for adapter input (dual power!)
Place the 555 DC motor into the front housing. Align it properly and fasten with two M3 screws for a snug, vibration-free hold.
β Result: Stable base for reliable torque output.
Snap or screw the middle section onto the motor mount. The air vents line up perfectly to cool the motor while it spins at high RPMs.
Slide the 18650 battery into its holder. Align the terminals, secure the section using 3 screws, and ensure proper insulation.
β οΈ Important: Check polarity before wiring!
π Step 4: Install the Drill Bit Holder
Mount a chuck or drill bit coupler on the motor shaft (typically 2mm or 3.17mm shaft diameter).
β Checkpoints:
- Bit holder should be tightly fitted
- Spin manually to ensure zero wobble
- Do a test run before sealing everything
Mount a male DC jack at the rear grip section. This allows switching between battery and DC power adapter β perfect for longer tasks when the battery might run low. ππ Step 5: Add the Adapter Power Jack
